Never before in history, living conditions of a vast majority of people depended upon the proper reliability of technical objects. The technologies behind these objects evolve increasingly fast and exert a growing impact on the daily life. Parallel to this fact the complexity of social and technological systems constantly increases - as well as its mutual dependence and feedback.
As a result, it is important to create clear pictures concerning future conditions as a prerequisite to make reliable strategic decisions on a knowledge base as broad as possible. Especially engineers, shaping the technological environment of humans more than any other occupational group, should face these issues and related scientific methods intensively within the phase of their education.
Therefore the Institute for Technology Analysis and Foresight in the field of Security Research provides lectures concerning this matter to students in the field of mechanical engineering. The objective is to impart methods of future studies including their epistemological foundations and to practically test these methods by group work.
